Fynbos (fine bush-Afrikaans/Dutch) is the name given to a family of 7000 plant species that are indigenous to the southern tip of the African continent. The terroir produces highly aromatic and uniquely South African flavours. Fynbos comprises 80% of the Cape Floristic Region, the smallest, yet most diverse of the world’s six floral kingdoms.
You’ll be guided through a tasting of eight Fynbos botanicals starting in their most essential form as a herbal tea infusion, then sweet cordials, progressing to aromatic vinaigrettes and infused oils along with edible naturals and seasoning salts, culminating in soothing digestives accompanied by sweet treats.

The event is hosted by The Cape Town Heritage Trust in the former garden manager’s home in South Africa’s oldest formal garden. The Dutch East India Company grew fruit and vegetables here to supply their naval fleet passing the Cape from as early as 1652. The Medicinal Garden showcases additional indigenous plants used in traditional healing.

Customer Reviews

We really enjoyed the experience, we felt so connected to this South African unique treasure, and as we smell the dried plants we took home it still reminds us of the beauty of the wonderful Cape landscapes! Giselle told us lots of interesting facts about fynbos with all her passion and we enjoyed tasting it in some of its forms (infusion, distillate and salad!) - Fabio Limonta

Really uplifting and fascinating insight into the beauty and medicinal benefits of the Cape Flora fynbos. Brilliantly presented with exquisite attention to the detail and thoroughly enjoyable. Many thanks to Giselle and we would love to come back to do the apothecary course. - Lucy Arterton
