Fynbos Tasting

Cape Town

Activity Description

The Fynbos Tasting experience is the perfect introduction to Cape Town, providing indigenous context for the region’s most scenic attraction. The Cape Floral Region was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004 and Table Mountain is at the centre of one of the world’s great areas of terrestrial biodiversity. Fynbos is the major vegetation, encompassing some 7000 protected species.
The Fynbos Tasting experience condenses the best of the edible and medicinal varieties in a unique two-hour flavour trail of fresh edibles and infusions of teas, cordials, tinctures, vinaigrettes, salts and digestives culminating in a mixology session.
Preparation begins 80km outside of Cape Town in the Winelands area, which explains the 48-hour booking deadline.
“We pick and prep eleven indigenous botanicals and bring them to the Company’s Garden on the day of the Tasting”, says Cape Town Fynbos Experience creator and presenter, Giselle Courtney.
The Garden is very special as it’s where South Africa’s recorded history began. Interaction with people of the Cape from the time of the VOC settlement in 1652 yielded the traditional knowledge of Fynbos, which became part of every household apothecary. South Africa’s unmistakeable national flower, the King Protea and health-boosting Rooibos tea are two of the 7000 Fynbos species.

The Fynbos Tasting experience is hosted by The Cape Town Heritage Trust in the former Garden Director’s home in the Company’s Garden.

“Giselle Courtney’s Cape Town Fynbos Experience is our hot new pic on the floral calendar.” Conde Nast House & Garden – April 2019

The experience is much more than a tasting, according to visitors. “It’s sophisticated, detailed, multi-layered and preceded by intensive preparation”, says Giselle. “While presenting, I am also supremely conscious of verbally intertwining the flow of information with the tactile experience and capturing the ethereal nature of Fynbos.”

Customer Reviews

Enjoyable experience delivered by a friendly, knowledgeable and charismatic host. I learnt much about fynbos and it was great to be able to smell, touch and taste the plants. The experience is located in a lovely public garden. - Phe D

We really enjoyed the experience, we felt so connected to this South African unique treasure, and as we smell the dried plants we took home it still reminds us of the beauty of the wonderful Cape landscapes! Giselle told us lots of interesting facts about fynbos with all her passion and we enjoyed tasting it in some of its forms (infusion, distillate and salad!) - Fabio Limonta

Really uplifting and fascinating insight into the beauty and medicinal benefits of the Cape Flora fynbos. Brilliantly presented with exquisite attention to the detail and thoroughly enjoyable. Many thanks to Giselle and we would love to come back to do the apothecary course. - Lucy Arterton
